Resolutions: Are they REALLY worth it this year?

That time I peed my pants on a run.

A few weeks ago, after getting cleared from my surgeon to start running, I went for my first run since the summer. Hooray! And then, about 3 blocks in … I was peeing my pants a little with every step. I could’ve decided, “This is gross,” and turned back. But, no one was around, it was gorgeous out, and I had carved out this time to challenge myself. So I enjoyed my whole run even as my pants got more and more soaked. And when I got home, I didn’t feel gross at all, I felt accomplished and proud! It wasn’t the first time I’d peed myself as an adult and probably won’t be the last.

After the birth of my son 5 years ago I spent lots of time healing from diastasis recti, (I worked with a pelvic floor PT, created a specific routine on the reformer, and challenged my pelvic floor with intentional jumping and running). It took over 2 years, but slowly my diastasis and pelvic floor issues (including incontinence) improved.

So why did it feel like I was starting all over again on this recent run? I’d lost the consistency of caring for my pelvic floor health in my fitness routines. But with the foundation I set a few years ago, it won’t be another 2 years before I see improvements this time. In fact, in just the past 3 weeks, I’ve been able to run with only minimal leakage. I have upped my diastasis recti specific work and started short daily runs around the block to add to my running base.

Will this issue ever be “cured” for me? I can’t know for sure. What I do know is I can keep looking forward, take small steps each day towards growth, and acknowledge the gifts of each present moment.

Resolutions: To Set or Not to Set?

How does this all relate to New Years Resolutions? My advice this year is to start with the familiar, something that you’ve engaged with in the past and have the tools to start again. It’s been a crazy year and the stroke of midnight isn’t really going to change anything. It’s a day that starts like any other day. With choices. So start from a foundation that you’ve built, name your intention, give appropriate input, challenge yourself, and then reflect on how that goes and expect to readjust your plan along the way.

Resolutions can be a wonderful practice to engage with because it creates self reflection, and with self reflection we gain insight. Look forward to what you want and acknowledge where you are.

If your resolutions revolve around creating a consistent movement routine, I would love to help. This is not just about doing pilates, but looking at your overall movement habits, naming what you enjoy about staying active and creating a holistic movement plan that works for your life.
